In 2023, Russians spent 917.5 billion rubles ordering food online. The increase was 47% compared to 2022, according to a study by Infoline, reviewed by the Vedomosti newspaper. Analysts did not take into account the delivery category of cereals, pastas, preserves and other similar dry food products.

During the year, Russians spent almost 918 billion rubles on food deliveries

The greatest growth in the online food sales market was observed at the end of 2023. Infoline explained this by the growth in food sales through markets, including in pick-up format. The growth was also influenced by promotions and pickup bonuses, as there is a shortage of couriers in the industry, which has increased the cost of delivery, especially express delivery.

  • The Moscow Department of Transport intends to create a system for registering and accounting for couriers, which will track their working time and movements. Other proposals include consulting with city authorities on plans to open dark stores (places to store and pick up orders) in order to develop transportation infrastructure around them.
  • According to the Interregional Association of Courier Services (MAKS), in 2023, about 1.2 million people worked in the courier sector and the deficit was at least 100 thousand people.
