The new study was carried out by the Karolinska Institute. The full findings were published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.
As part of the scientific study, experts analyzed data from more than 2.8 million people. Its aim was to compare the heritability of type 1 diabetes in adults and children.
The analysis found that having a first-degree relative with the disease significantly increases a person’s chances of developing type 1 diabetes in adulthood. The risk is higher if a relative develops diabetes early on. In general, type 1 diabetes is less common in adults than in children due to genetic reasons. In other words, environmental factors play a more important role in the development of the disease.
