A bunch of laser roulettes passed through me, but before that I did not have optical models in my hands, I just somehow looked at the total station at the surveyors. The precision with which they measure the distance and how capricious they are with external lighting was interesting, because even the not very cheap tape measures from UNIT itself work mediocrely on a sunny day.
I did not pay attention to the dimensions in the description, so I was surprised to receive such a compact box, plus they packed everything so that there was no free space.

The eyepiece is large, so we decided to abandon the sealing rubber under the eye, the lens casts a blue tint. Below it are two buttons used to start the measurement and change its types. The outer lens emits a green color, so the optics are coated. The focus wheel is recessed at the top, the surface is covered with soft rubber with notches



Well thought-out ergonomics, fingers reach all elements without problems

The projection is activated with a short press of the left button, it turns off automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity. The minimum measurement distance is 3 meters, but only at this distance, the projection will be out of focus or the object. After 5 meters the problem disappears

I compared the accuracy to the proven UNIT UT396B tape measure with a maximum distance of 120 meters, but only 45 meters were squeezed out during the day without reflective plates. The TR1 has a much larger step (10 cm), but the accuracy is still quite good for field conditions, where ± half a meter per kilometer does not usually play a special role.


To check the maximum distance, I went out into the wild and shot from a small mound, starting from a house in the distance.

After pressing and holding the activation button, the continuous measurement mode starts, the data is updated three times per second, the grass is too heterogeneous, and the optical system loses a signal, otherwise there is no failure, only the angle measurement in 1 annoying degree increments. As for the accuracy, it is difficult to check here, but judging by the maps, the distance to the houses is about 514 m.

In normal mode, we get the straight-line distance to the top of the object, but with a short press of the right button, you can switch to calculating the horizontal distance, based on the angle of the body at the time of measurement. . In the same way, using not very complex formulas, you can find out the height of an object without getting close to it. The calculated data is displayed in the lower right corner. By the way, the device notifies you about data updates with a short vibration, there is no tweeter


Ramp compensation tells you how far you should calculate when hitting the ball while playing golf, taking into account the curvature of the terrain. In my case, the houses are below the horizon, so the ball will fly 511 meters as if it hit 492 meters in a straight line. It’s generally of little use in our realities, but at least I figured it out, otherwise local reviewers always missed this item.


There is also an option to define a flag, while taking various measurements, but displaying the minimum value, filtering out background objects.

And finally, the optical speedometer mode. The rangefinder makes various measurements and, by changing the distance, determines the speed at which the object is moving. It looks like the truth, and there is nothing complicated in the calculation method.

Above all I was surprised by the sensitivity of the optical system. Laser roulettes in the evening at 50 meters work every other time, but here up to a kilometer without any problems.

The maximum distance measured during the day was 1,187 meters, which is close to the maximum declared. I thought 6x zoom wouldn’t be enough to see objects at that distance, but details look even better with the naked eye than through the phone’s lens.

Not far from this place I found a power line pole, so I measured it without getting out of the car.

I got distance to top 32.5m, to base 25m, height 20.8m (19m without my height). Checking the same distance to the base is not difficult, there is a formula d=S*cosνwe substitute our data, we get 32.4×0.766044(taken at 40° from the previous measurement)= 24.82, which is close to the value obtained, taking into account the large step of measuring the angle of inclination. Other formulas are used to calculate height.



After all the tests, the battery was discharged for another 5 hours in the continuous measurement mode, but after unpacking, I did not charge it. Charging took 4 hours, the battery absorbed a capacity of 450 mAh during this time


Results
An interesting gadget, compared to classic laser roulettes, there are advantages and disadvantages:
The sensitivity of the optical system is amazing, at work in direct sunlight I measured the distance to bright objects within 800 meters without any problems.
The optics themselves aren’t bad either, there’s just blurriness at the edge, the glasses are light, the eyepiece is large so that the projection is fully visible from a distance of about 35mm, so you can wear glasses
The case is small, but comfortable, all the controls are conveniently located, the index finger rests on the wheel, and the buttons are large, feedback in the form of vibration is quite a rational solution, because you cannot hear the squeak in a noisy environment , and you won’t miss tactile feedback
The accuracy is good, but the step is small, only 0.1 meters, which is much more than that of laser tape measures, but since the optics are used over long distances, that error is usually negligible. Also, the lack of a tripod mount does not increase the accuracy of the measurements, so two measurements in a row may differ simply due to hand shake.
Well, one more disadvantage is the usual LCD sections of the HUD without backlight, which means that in low light it will be difficult to see the data, for example, in a warehouse, after a few measurements, you had to look at bright areas, which not very convenient
