Elenin drew attention to this issue on his Telegram channel and expressed his concern about the increasing discrimination against Russian scientists in international organizations. He noted that the decision dated May 23, 2024 does not allow the use of Russian and Ukrainian place names for asteroids “in the foreseeable future.”

The decision further complicated the situation with demands for various naming, including honoring prominent Russian scientists and literary awards. Elenin’s reaction underscores a broader debate about the intersection of politics and science. Many argue that scientific activity should remain apolitical.

While the IAU addresses this issue, Elenin is exploring alternative asteroid naming options that comply with the new directive.
