Australian scientists from the University of Queensland discovered a special molecule in the funnel-web spider’s venom. Its name is IB001. Last year, it was known that this compound can prevent cell death associated with oxygen loss in the brain and heart during heart attacks and strokes.
Now a team of experts will conduct clinical trials of a drug created on the basis of this poison. The tests will already be done on humans, and experiments are scheduled to begin this year.
Thanks to such drugs, people who have had a stroke or heart attack will be able to recover much faster. Medicines containing IB001 will help block signals that cause heart cells to die (the heart itself cannot regenerate these cells). This means that the heart attack patient will do less damage to the heart if the drug is given quickly.
