Lutein is a naturally occurring pigment, according to Elana Usdensky, a registered dietitian in Ontario. It’s responsible for the yellow-orange hues in many foods, but it’s also found in spinach and kale.

Here are some ways lutein improves vision.

Filters harmful blue light. This reduces oxidative stress and protects eye tissue from long-term damage.

May protect against age-related macular degeneration. Research shows that people who get plenty of lutein are less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration. This is because lutein acts as an antioxidant.

Reduces the risk of cataracts. A number of studies have shown that those who consume more lutein are generally less likely to develop cataracts.

Alleviates dry eye syndrome. Promising research has shown that consuming 3 to 20 mg of lutein daily for 12 weeks may improve dry eye symptoms.

Can reduce eye fatigue. One study showed that lutein’s ability to filter blue light from computers may protect vision in the short and long term.
