Later, another chimpanzee group in the same center went further – they decorated themselves with knives not only in the ears, but also “behind”. It looked like a strange fashion trend without any benefit.

Scientists from Utrecht and Darem universities closely watched and learned this behavior: Chimpanzees copied each other. Moreover, as it appeared, these groups sometimes had a knife or partner rails that matched to the ears for cleaning. Perhaps chimpanzees were simply imitated to people – and then they began to copy each other.

Such “useless” habits are rare in animals, especially in wild nature. However, under captivity with less stress and more leisure time, monkeys have an area for “creativity” and communication.
