Since its launch in 2012, MFi-certified Lightning accessories include a small integrated circuit that certifies the authenticity of parts. Third-party charging cables do not have this chip, which often results in “This accessory is not supported” warnings on connected Apple devices.
Apple is expected to replace the Lightning port with USB-C on iPhone 15 models, MFi certification is here permanently. Foxconn is reportedly already mass producing accessories such as cables that comply with Apple’s certification.
From a user perspective, the problem is that Apple can use the MFi program to limit some features like fast charging and high speed data transfer on third-party cables.
