The researchers found that middle-aged workers who were consistently low-paid were 38% more likely to die within 12 years than their higher-paid peers. The analysis was carried out over 12 years and included approximately 4,000 workers who were at least 50 years old at the start of the study.

According to co-author Katrina Kezios, low-wage workers are more likely to be employed in jobs with “minimal medical and financial benefits” (research conducted in the USA) and also face greater workplace hazards.
