The study identified more than three million key regulatory elements in the human genome, about half of which were previously unknown. At least 10% of the genome has been found to be functional; this is about ten times the 1% that encodes proteins. By comparing the genomes of 240 mammals, the researchers were able to identify regions in the genome that allow some species to have a superior sense of smell or hibernation.

The results obtained are also important for understanding the origin of diseases. Most of the mutations that cause common diseases such as diabetes or obsessive compulsive disorder are outside the genes and are related to gene regulation.

The study makes it easy to identify these mutations and understand what’s going on.
