The cable, which will stretch for 1,100 kilometers in the international waters of the Black Sea, will connect EU member states to the Caucasus region. The project aims to reduce the region’s reliance on terrestrial fiber optic links passing through Russia, which is considered a special operation and “vulnerable” on the backdrop of tensions between Europe and the Russian Federation.

The need for the Black Sea cable was jointly identified by the EU and Georgia in 2021, but recent well-known events have further highlighted the importance of reliable and stable connections. It was not specified when the cable would be laid.
