In an interview with the prime minister’s agency, Stepanov stressed that personal data should be handled responsibly in order to maintain peace of mind when communicating online.
To protect privacy, Stepanov suggested using the username instead of revealing the full name. He strongly recommended not to disclose confidential documents such as passports, licenses or bank card details. Also, personal photos and videos should be handled with care as they can be used by scammers.
Stepanov noted that messages sent through popular instant messengers such as Telegram and WhatsApp are stored indefinitely on servers so that scammers can “refer to” them at any time.
