Over there police post and the Milan prosecutor’s office has dismantled two criminal organizations accused of several video surveillance cameras hacked private and then sell access online. The operation was called Rear Window, the original name of Hitchcock’s cult film.

A real criminal circle that stretched all over the world. There were those who paid to rent cameras access and spy inside, while others limited themselves to buying ‘highlight’ videos.

A catalog for all tastes: from homes to offices, past the changing rooms of gyms and swimming pools, but also hotel rooms. You can imagine the most requested content: «The ultimate goal – writes Milano Today – was in fact to steal images depicting the unsuspecting victims during the consummation of sexual relations or acts of autoeroticism».

The investigations started in 2019 thanks to two reports, one of which arose from an operation against the child porn of the New Zealand Police, which led to the identification of an Italian. After confiscating the Italian’s phone, the postal police also discovered several videos of unmistakably private houses.

Then a second report, this time from an Italian who had discovered online the videos stolen from the cameras at a swimming pool he visited. A coincidence that led to the birth of a parallel investigation against a second blackmailer.

While there has been horrific assault, there is certainly only the charge for it for now unauthorized access to computer systems (maximum penalty in our legal system: three years in prison) and conspiracy to commit a crime, but the prosecutor checks to see if there are conditions to challenge other possible offenses, including possession of child pornography.

The two criminal groups acted like a small crime company, with very definite roles and powers. There were hackers scanning the network looking for the largest number of video surveillance systems that were connected to the Internet and were poorly secured. Then a second group was in charge of gauging the crowd, chasing the most attractive homes for the customers of vouyeristi. UNTILSometimes the videos were rejected because the quality of the images was not satisfactory. Finally, there was the sales phase, which took place strictly on Telegram

The images were presented to an audience of more than 10,000 potential customers. The actual videos were then uploaded exclusively to a secret Telegram group. The price to enter? 20 euros in cryptocurrencies. To get permanent access to the cameras you had to pay the same amount.

One of the two criminal groups had raised at least 50,000 euros in cryptocurrencies thanks to this market.
