A decade ago, in 2012, Nissan promised that its soon-to-be-retired Nissan Leaf electric vehicle could return energy stored in a battery to homes or the power grid during peak hours or even in an emergency. .

This technology is known as car-to-grid (V2G), car-to-home (V2H), and car-to-charge (V2L), which are used interchangeably to describe a system that turns electric vehicles into a backup power plant (e.g. during a power outage).

Well now Nissan has approved the first two-way charging system for its electric vehicle… in the US. The FE-15 charger from Fermata Energy is the first system of its kind to receive UL 9741 certification for bi-directional charging solutions.

Other automakers also have bi-directional charging solutions, such as the Ford Intelligent Backup Power feature available on the F-150 Lightning electric pickup.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6 also have a V2L feature that can make them great camping companions.. Tesla, for its part, is ditching this concept, pushing its PowerWall backup battery instead.

For Nissan and Fermata, the solution is simple. This was announced by Fermata Energy CEO David Slutsky. The solution can help reduce the load on the power systema problem that, although not existing now, may become a real problem in the future.

All 2013 and newer Nissan Leaf vehicles are approved for use with the FE-15 Dual Charger.and the automaker says the battery warranty won’t be affected.

To take advantage of bi-directional charging, which is sometimes not standard, the Leaf requires a CHAdeMO fast charging port. Notably, the 2013 Leaf model received a more powerful 24 kWh battery, but is similar in capacity to the 2012 model.

And while there was fast charging capability in previous models, Nissan may not want to be held responsible for the rapid deterioration of the battery.
