Apple tells Ars Technica that a new firmware update for the Apple Studio Display should at least slightly improve the image quality of the built-in webcam. The update is currently only available to developers, as the firmware is loaded via macOS Monterey 12.4 Beta 3. It is unknown when the update will be released for all users.
This beta update brings improvements to the Studio Displays camera, including reduction of visual noise and improvements to contrast and framing.
According to a comparison by AppleInsider, the image quality is indeed slightly better after the firmware update, but no real miracles. Images taken with the webcam still look blurry and very grainy. Low-light video calling continues to do pretty well, too.
For at least 1800 euros you’d expect more, especially since the 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens is basically the same as the iPhone 11, while the Studio Display has an A13 Bionic chip for image processing. Still, one of the main criticisms of the Apple Studio Display was the webcam’s video and photo quality.
