Me too’European Union will have a constellation of internet satellites, Parliament and Council have reached an agreement. The project requires the launch of 170 satellites into low Earth orbit and service activation is expected by the end of 2027.

The plan was first announced last February and the process leading up to the launch of the first satellites will take quite some time. In this way, the EU competes directly with the service SpaceX Starlinks.

The project clearly aims to close the digital divide and bring powerful internet connections, even to remote areas, which are currently not reached by traditional network infrastructures. The infrastructure belongs to the European Union, but the services will probably be provided by local telcos. The European Union also wants to reduce dependence on non-European companies in such a strategic sector as that of telecommunications. Not only that: the European Union is also considering the possibility of guaranteeing the continuity of communication and the Internet in the event of serious calamities that could jeopardize the integrity of the cable network infrastructure.

In addition, EU satellites could one day also bring the Internet to some countries of the African continent, now under the influence of China. The launch of the first satellites – and the start of the first test phase – is planned for the end of 2023.
