In a speed test of 512GB BlackMagic SSD drives in Apple’s latest flagship, it showed read speeds of around 2,970 MB/s and write speeds of around 3,150 MB/s, compared to 4,900 MB/s read and 3,950 MB/s write. The M1 Pro was capable with a 512GB SSD.

The reason for the difference most likely lies in the chips. According to 9to5Mac, the 512GB SSD in the previous generation 14-inch laptop had four NAND chips, while the M2 Pro had two. Obviously, these chips are larger, so computers have the same amount of memory, but their performance is lower because they cannot parallelize reads and writes to the same extent.
