Apple WWDC 2023 only a few weeks left and we expect the company to release new software updates for iphone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac and more. This means we’ll see previews of iOS 17, watchOS 10, iPadOS 17, and macOS 14 during the conference. However, a new report hints that iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will no longer be supported on devices released between November 2015 and November. 2017.

According to MacRumors, reputable source For Upcoming Software Updates, iOS 17 will no longer support the following devices: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch first-generation iPad Pro, and fifth-generation iPad.

If so, it shows that Apple will end support for devices with an A11 Bionic chip or older with the new iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 updates. But it looks like there will be some rare exceptions, such as the 6th and 7th generations. iPad models with the A10 Fusion processor, and 2nd generation 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the A10X Fusion processor.

Right now, any iPhone or iPad with an A5 to A11 chip has a bootrom security vulnerability that Apple cannot fix. This is because the bootrom only works in a read-only state. Due to this exploit, these particular devices can be permanently jailbroken on multiple versions of iOS, allowing users to change the iOS file system.

iOS 16 last year also ended support for some older devices, including the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, the original iPhone SE, the latest iPod touch, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 4. Therefore, the drop in iOS 17 support for The iPhone 8 and iPhone X devices are not entirely surprising – they are already five years old. Apple still supports software updates for older devices better than most Android manufacturers. However, it’s good to hear that the iPhone X may finally be sent to the pasture, given how influential the phone has been over the years.

Expect to see iOS 17 and other software updates at WWDC on June 5th.
